Overview

Decommissioning built for live colo and enterprise floors

When a cage lease ends, a refresh lands, or a site goes dark, the work is not “haul away old boxes.” It is un-racking under change windows, logging every serial before gear leaves the floor, sanitizing or destroying media so audit can close the ticket, and recovering residual value instead of writing the whole project off as cost.

Asset Decom is a Kansas City white-glove ITAD partner built for live data centers, colo access rules, and multi-site programs that need one chain of custody. We run on-site crews and freight lanes across the Midwest and nationwide — lean on KC and regional colo/enterprise work, ready when your footprint is broader.

If you need media sanitization detail, see hard drive destruction. If residual value is part of the business case, see server buyback.

Audience

Who this is for

This service fits teams that cannot treat decommissioning like office e-waste pickup:

Colo tenants

Exiting or resizing cages under facility rules, escort requirements, and tight maintenance windows.

Enterprise data center owners

Refreshing racks, consolidating sites, or retiring a floor while production stays live next door.

IT, facilities, and procurement

Teams who need serialized logs, Certificates of Destruction, and a payout trail — not a vague “we recycled it” email.

Multi-site programs

One vendor log across regions instead of a patchwork of local scrapers.

We focus on servers, blades, storage arrays, and enterprise networking, including Cisco, Arista, and F5 gear commonly found on colo floors. Office printers and consumer desktops are not the product.

Process

Inventory in. Certificates and payout out.

  1. 1

    Inventory audit

Send a list or book an on-site count. You get a locked buyback range before anything leaves the floor, so finance and procurement see the offset before the truck rolls.

  2. 2

    Secure extraction

On-site un-racking, cable pull, pack-out, and serial logging. Chain of custody starts in the cage, not at the loading dock. We work to your access window and facility procedures.

  3. 3

    Wipe, certify, and payout

Media is sanitized or physically destroyed to NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 — Clear, Purge, or Destroy as the asset and risk profile require. You receive serialized Certificates of Destruction. Recovered hardware moves to cash buyback via ACH or wire, or value can offset labor and logistics.

Chain of custody

Cage to COD — one continuous record

Audit and procurement do not care that “someone picked it up.” They care about a continuous record from cage to COD:

  • ▸ Serial capture at extraction
  • ▸ Asset log tied to site, cage, and work order
  • ▸ Sanitization or destruction method recorded per drive or media unit
  • ▸ Certificate of Destruction suitable to file with compliance and vendor risk

One serialized log across multi-site projects keeps regional handoffs from becoming gaps in the paper trail.

Colo access windows and live floors

Live colo and enterprise floors do not pause for a scrap run. We plan around:

  • ▸ Scheduled maintenance or decommission windows
  • ▸ Escort and badge rules
  • ▸ Cage density, power, and cable plant realities
  • ▸ Pack-out that does not turn the aisle into a hazard for neighboring tenants

Freight lanes cover lots that do not need a full cage visit; on-site crews cover the ones that do. If the gear is in a U.S. facility, we can take it down, sanitize or destroy media, and pay out under one program.

MULTI-SITE

Multi-site decommissions

Refreshing or exiting across several metros usually fails when each site invents its own vendor. Asset Decom runs multi-site work under one serialized log: same process language, same COD format, same buyback path. Midwest colo and enterprise density is our home turf; nationwide crews and freight cover the rest of the U.S. footprint.

BUYBACK

Buyback that offsets decommissioning cost

Decommissioning is often budgeted as pure cost. Residual value on servers, networking, CPUs, enterprise RAM, and NVMe can change the math. We return value as:

  • Direct cash via ACH or wire
  • Labor and logistics offset against the decommission
  • Revenue share or consignment where that structure fits

Work on live data center media carries risk. Asset Decom carries $1M E&O / cyber liability as a stated coverage signal for enterprise and colo buyers evaluating vendors. We answer RFPs with the credentials we actually hold.

Media handling follows NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2: Clear, Purge, or Destroy, with serialized Certificates of Destruction. Details and media types are on the hard drive destruction page.
